Juniperus horizontalis 'Wiltonii' - Blue Rug Juniper

The Blue Rug Juniper (also called Wiltoni) certainly has a perfectly appropriate name. Native to North America this Juniper serves well as a year-round groundcover, it's silvery blue foliage turning a bit purplish during the cold winter months. What I particularly like about this Juniper is the look it gives when spilling along a rock garden or over a stone wall; all but the very tips of the runners are too heavy for the plant to lift toward the sky, giving the appearance of small waves at the leading edge of silvery, splashing water. As with many Junipers the Wiltoni prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Often I'll find it having been used in a design where it was placed near a small whip of a tree more than a decade ago; since then the tree will have grown and extended a large leaf canopy over the Blue Rug, robbing it of needed sunshine, causing significant dieback. Placed appropriately the Blue Rug can be an expansive, flowing evergreen groundcover to really dress up your garden.
