The species Juniperus chinensis is in it's natural habitat in China, Mongolia and Japan, though most all of the cultivars were created outside of these areas. The Gold Star Juniper is one such cultivar, introduced by The Conard-Pyle Co. The characteristics of the Gold Star are very similar to that of the Gold Lace Juniper, except that the Gold Star's foliage tend more toward blue on the inner foliage, and the yellows at the tips are more subdued.
The Gold Star does best in full sun and well-drained soils. This evergreen shrub is well chosen as a foundation or mass planting, and with the variation in foliage, will add a good deal of winter interest. Hardy to zone 4, tolerant of drought and salt, this is an excellent choice for evergreen color in rural or urban settings.
