The Cinderella Flowering Crab (Malus 'Cinzam') is an adorable little flowering crab tree, hybridized by Lake County Nursery in Ohio to perform a task that's becoming more and more important in today's big houses with tiny yards: be small.
At full maturity the Cinderella crab will stand only 8' in height and 5' wide, taking an upright, irregular oval shape. And with it's extremely slow growth rate, it will be many years before it reaches that size, making it a perfect tree for small patio gardens or as a specimen plant that people of all ages (and sizes) can enjoy in a small landscape bed along an entryway.
Foliage first appears in spring and is a bright green tipped with red and has smooth edges. As the growing season continues the foliage becomes more serrate and darkens to a deeper green and loses the red in the tips of the leaf, reaching a size of 2-3" long and 1 ½" wide. The foliage on this dwarf tree is very dense, and turns yellow in autumn.
Like the foliage, the blooms are also thick and numerous. Buds begin a deep red that fade to white in mid-spring (full bloom tends to occur in the latter part of May). As the flowers fall the fruit emerges, and when it ripens toward the end of the growing season, the ¼" diameter fruit are a golden yellow color. Hardy from USDA Zone 4 through Zone 8 (the specimen in the photos is in Zone 4), it can handle the same climates that ordinary flowering crab trees can, and with a claim of increased disease resistance.
Malus 'Manbeck Weeper' - Anne E Flowering Crabapple - Blooms and foliage very similar to 'Cinderella', but much larger growth habit
Malus 'Donald Wyman' - Donald Wyman Flowering Crab - Also with white blooms but much larger than the Cinderella, bearing red fruit in fall.
