| The Crispa Spirea is distinctive among the many varieties of Spirea, mainly because of it's deeply serrated and sometimes slightly twisted foliage. New leaves are red and fade to green as the season progresses, with the very tips of the leaf serrations keeping some of the red color. Blooms appear in late spring to early summer and are a deep pink. You will occasionally see variegations in new foliage, which should be pruned out to maintain the look of the plant. It prefers full sun, and will tolerate most any soil they are planted in. Deadheading blooms can produce a second show of flowers later in the season, and as with most other Spirea, the Crispa maintains a clean look if pruned hard back every 3-4 years. |
