Cotoneaster

For gardeners enthusiastic about the Cotoneaster, the details are often what make this plant a favorite choice in landscape beds. Whether it's a variety that stands 10' tall or one that hugs the earth as it spreads, they are known for their masses of small, glossy foliage. Along with the detail of small foliage is often equally small blooms. Many varieties break bud as a deep pink bloom that fades to a much lighter pink when the flower petals are fully open.

This native to Europe and Asia is a member of the Rosaceae (Rose) family and thrives in virtually any kind of soil, be it clay, loam or sand. They prefer sunny locations but may also perform well with partial shade. Pruning is not often a job that must be carried out on these plants, unless it's to thin out crowded branches or maintain shape.

Beyond the blooms, Cotoneaster will often produce ample amounts of fruit. Most commonly the fruit is red, but there are also varieties with other berry colors, such as the Peking Cotoneaster's black fruit. Fall color is another excellent reason to select from this genera, as the foliage often turns a brilliant scarlet red. Some selections such as 'Tom Thumb' or other creeping varieites can even serve as a groundcover, and work very well in rock gardens.
