Berberis vulgaris - Common Barberry

Berberis vulgaris, the Common Barberry is native to Europe, Northern Africa and parts of Asia. Unlike most all of the cultivated varieties of this plant, the common barberry has bright green foliage. Along with the difference in color is a difference in size. Foliage is at least twice the size of any of the atropurpurea Barberries, as are the blooms, and unfortunately, the thorns. The mature size of this shrub can be as large as 6-8', and spread as much as 8-10'.
