Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Crimson Pygmy' - Crimson Pygmy Barberry

The Crimson Pygmy Barberry, with it's reddish-purple foliage, has become a staple in landscape installations. Sensitive to sunlight, the more shade the plant receives, the less purple will be seen in the foliage, with green taking over tas the dominant color of the plant. Blooms show in mid spring, with the outermost part of the bud staying reddish-purple, opening to a yellow interior. The blooms are small, short-lived and inconspicuous. And while one would think that the thorns would be a deterrent for rabbits looking for a free dinner, they aren't; I've had these Barberries nibbled to the ground by rabbits, thorns and all.
