Salt and wells

I am tired of my skating rink driveway! BUT: my well is actually smack dab in the middle of my driveway. The question is whether it would be good or bad to use salt or other ice melting chemicals on the driveway. I haven't in the past, but sometimes it would be nice if I could. The driveway is not paved, by the way, and the well is a drilled well about 165' deep. Also, to expand this question to a professional topic, would you risk salting this driveway if it were one of your clients?

As long as your well cap is sealed well, it shouldn't be a concern. You want it sealed to prevent not only salt from entering, but any other contaminant as well. If you don't go nuts with the salt, use only the amount required, the soil will filter out the salt before it reaches your water supply.

It'll only take a hundred years or so for the salt to reach your aquafer LOL! Pelican's right, yopur well should be sealed properly, and probably is, to keep out stuff a lot worse than salt. Salt your drive at conservative rates, not just for your well, but for the sake of your landscaping. Also remeber that your softener is already putting salt in your water so it may not be that big of a concern, other than your blood pressure!

If you use treated salt, you can cut down on the amount required.

just reading through this i think i mightt know of a product that can help you. i believe its called majestic ice melt. what it is, is a coated salt that is suppose to melt the ice but is safe on almost anything. im not sure who you could get it through i know john deere landscapes carrys it by me. the guy there told me its safe for concrete, pets, and landscapes. he actually told me i cut put on my front lawn and wouldnt effect my grass. i have not used this stuff as of yet but i plan to in the future. i hope that this might help you.
