Finding suppliers

How do I go about finding suppliers that will sell to me at wholesale? Just call around and ask or is there an easier way? And are there any tricks to convince them to sell to a (for now) part-timer? Thanks in advance.

Just call and ask if they offer wholesale prices to landscape firms.

If they do, they'll probably want you to fill out a credit app, which asks for the only "trick" - a Fed ID # and/or tax ID #. Licensing isn't required in WI, but might be elsewhere, so this might be another constraint.

Thanks for the quick response. I have the tax # and no special license needed here except irrigation, etc.
I'll start calling!

You may also need a state certificate hat allows you to withold sales tax. It is sometimes called a vendor's license. Some wholesalers want to see that to ensure that you are not just a homeowner trying to get a deal. This may or may not be applicable in your state.

Did you go to the Nursery Landscape Expo last month in San Antonio?? You had over 750 wholesale suppliers that you could have seen and visited with, examined product, placed orders, etc. If you missed it this year, be sure and go next year. It will be in Dallas, TX next year.

What kind of "supplies" are you looking for? What kind of business are you in? You neglected to mention WHY you should even be able to buy wholesale. You've got all kinds of wholesale suppliers around you right there in Dallas. Question is, are you eligible to buy from them or are you just trying to "trick" them? A legitimate business will never have trouble finding suppliers.

Let me know what you are looking for and I'll give you the names of some suppliers.

John

I am a part time landscape designer/contractor. I'm just trying to learn where to get the best prices for plants, hardscape materials, etc. Not trying to trick anybody, just get the best deal possible as some wholesalers dont want to deal with us little guys. Thanks for your input.
