I have a fence area (now trellised) I want to cover with a flowering vine and a friend has given me a few dozen morning glory seeds. Will I regret using this plant - will it take over my perennial garden that I just adore? Do you have a better plant suggestion or tips to keep the Moring Glory in check?

morning glory will probably be treated as an annual up in your zone. They are considered invasive weeds here and we refuse to use them. Some vines that are hardy for your zone are climbing hydrangeas, japanese honeysuckle that has vein variegation, boston ivy, and wisteria

There are many types of morning glory. The common nasty noxious weed (bindweed) that is also known as morning glory and is a big problem in some places (I know it was in Idaho). Then there are many annuals that are called morning glory (same family) that are related but not invasive noxious weeds. You should not be able to buy noxious weeds, so unless you are transplanting bindweed or your area is having difficulty with other morning glory it should not be a problem.
Matt, I know for certain what i have is an annual - the seeds I was given was what my friend is using to re-start his population. I will check out the climbing hydrangeas - they sound like a treat.
AGLA - thanks for the confirmation - it sounds like im in the clear!

Mac,
I personally wouldn't use the hydrangea.... to many off shoots and its not that pretty.
Look at the sweet autumn clematis or like Matt said a type of honeysuckle( just make sure its mildew resistant)
One of my favorites is Silver Lace vine. (Polygonum aubertii) Perrenial, pretty, fast growing, blooms May to Sept. MG will self seed prolifically, but I've never known it to be invasive. Bindweed, however, is the weed from hell. I swear, there really is only one bindweed plant in the world, and its all interconnected!
I forgot to say, the one thing I hate the most about MG, is the dead vines at the end of the season. Can be a headache to clear off of chain link, and they always look messy and trashy during the winter if you don't clear them.
