Physocarpus ooze?

Have some golden nugget physocarpus here that have recently developed some type of yukky ooze on the previously cut (months ago) branches. Looks like spit. Any ideas as to what this is?
Have been plagued by tip die-back this year I think and have been spraying with hort oil. Started on some weigela and moved to many other things, including this phsyo. Now they have the ooze and dark splotches all over the leaves.

HA! and we wanted a garden center someday. Think I'll re-thinkt that!
