Japanese Maple Borer
My local coop extension ID'd a boring beetle found in a Japenese maple as a Pine and Spruce Engraver Beetle. I want to educate my client, the owner of the tree, as to the identity of the pests affecting the tree. Have you guys heard of this beetle in this type of tree?
The tree had substantial root injury 2-3 years ago from a propane line buried 6-8" deep only 18" from the trunk. The canopy this spring is only 75% leafing out. There are borer tunnels deep into the wood of at least one branch. A wound facing south (old frost crack?) is bleeding/ bubbling and also features 5 or so circular 1/8" diameter entry holes.
I think I'll recommend removing the tree, but need to explain the pine beetle in a maple tree. Any help?
