Eradicating goldenrod

We have a client who wants a perennial planting in an area that is filled with an established patch of goldenrod. It's a fairly big area, maybe 1,000 square feet.

What's the best way to get rid of the goldenrod so that the new planting can take hold?

I would think just grubbing it out would be the ticket. Then put a pre-emergent down on your finished planting for a while.
