Hello fellow Grassroot'er (it's my trade name)
Small world I tell you. I haven't been on here in a very long time, and what do I see when I loggin, but someone with Grassroots in their name asking about Green roofs and green walls. I'm doing a lot of work on them right now. I haven't done an install or design, mainly because they haven't caught on in this area till recently. I'm going to be taking some courses on green roofs, and take a test next year to become a Certified Green Roof Professional. That program is through Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. I'd be more than happy to share some of my research I've been doing.
Have you installed a roof or wall?

In Atlanta
they are becoming more and more popular. City Hall has one, as do some other businesses around town. I can't see marketing them to homeowners, but commercially, i think they'll catch on.
that's cool that you are thinking along these lines too...
what region are you in?

I'm in omaha, nebraska. The first green roof in nebraska was installed late last year in Lincoln, and there will be a new one going in here this season. A few more are planned for the city buildings. Omaha has really taken the inititive to develop themselves as a green/sustainable city. It is in it's infancy, but is starting to grow quickly.
One thing that I hope changes is the notion that 'green/sustainable' construction/building is a seperate componant of construction. It should be thought of as the correct way to operate, it's a mindset.

check this manufacturer out for the walls Hercules Manufacturing
who would have thought that nebraska would be on the cutting edge, huh?
i've been to lincoln and omaha before. i thought they were both pretty towns. and chicago style pizza! kinda weird going to the midwest from the deep south though. much more reserved. we should do a grassroots hands across america! ha ha.

Grassroots power! Lets get it going.
Omaha has the drive to be on the cutting edge, it's just a matter of whether we can transform that drinve into tangible results, which if i have anything to do with it, it will happen. I've seen the Hercules block, I'm talking with our local supplier who will be getting the block for me this season. I'm hoping to get a couple of them sold here shortly, can't wait to get them in and see what the reaction to them is.
Have you used the hercules block before?

I don't know anything about living walls or roofs, but I've heard of them before. Checked out some pics. I think this is great! I'm very interested in sustainable living. Kudos to all of you who are doing these, or looking into them! I also hope it catches on. I don't know if it would impact our business at all as we're mostly on the CT shoreline, but it would be great for the environment. Good luck!!

Thanks for the contact info. I've looked through Roofscapes website and I really like what I see.
Do you do green roofs yourself? How did you get involved in a project with him?

I did the grow media install, the landscaper was Thomas Bly from Or,design by Charles Miller from PA. Project in Southern Cal. I was called in for my blower truck service.
We do some second and third story planters in apartment complexes ,always through a landscaper who has the contract, dirty work, not air flow around work zone, but pays well for time involved.
