wax myrtle

I like to use wax myrtle here in Wilmington, and trim them to look like a tree. But, the roots sprout all around underneath them and I have to trim the sprouts with my string trimmer a lot during the warm growing season. How can I control this, if at all?
Thanks

That's one of the bad qualities of the wax myrtle.
