Plant of the Week 78

Plant of the Week 78 is a warm-season annual in zone 4b/5a.

Even in the sometimes frozen tundra of southern Wisconsin,
POTW 78 will self-sow in dry sunny spots, germinating from the previous season's seed set in late spring, and blooming from early summer to the first hard frost.

For an elevated planter that never gets watered or weeded, there is no better bet for a show-stopping summer than Plant of the Week 78.

Private message me with your guess. Don't post your answer in the thread. Winners and answer will be posted in about a week.

Enjoy!

Here's what dan deutekom has to say about the first picture, on his way to being wrong about a POTW for the first time I remember:

Quote:
It is sometimes difficult to figure out a plant when you see a picture of it that is out of context because there is nothing to give a sense of scale to the flowers and leaves. LOL
Hope this helps.

I've sent in my wild guess. I think Voodoo stays up late finding these charmers.

Still getting some stragglers for POTW78, so we will hold off on the answer for another day or so...

Plant of the Week 78 is Datura sp. I wish I could tell you the species, but I was surprised to discover Datura is a large genus, and had little luck keying it out.

Congratulations to dan deutekom, Lanelle, TrickyDick, Ford, phototropic1 and Helios.

It was the second picture that nailed it for me. As soon as I saw the flowers in a side view and the scale I had it. I don't know what species it is. I have never quite seen Datura leaves that look quite like those. I usually see a more lobed shape leaf.

Yeah, that side view picture really said 'Datura' to me too, Dan. Based on about a 20 second internet image search, I guessed that the species was Datura inoxia. What do ya'll think? I know there are about a kazillion Datura species, so I'm not exactly expecting to be spot on.
