I worked in a nursery for a few years a while back that had one that we keep fairly well pruned and did not have much issues with dieback. As far as I know, they do not have the wilt problem so much here in the Northwest, as I have planted quite a few and have never seen one die, the one in the nursery was over 15 years old and we never had problems with it seeding itself either, but the flowers were definitely a huge mess to contend with, moreso because it was planted in a mass of erica and you had to pick all the flowers out.
As far as the chocolate variety goes, I just can't justify spending $100 dollars on a 5 gallon plant that always looks like crap, I have never seen a decent looking specimen to even consider showing it to a client.
