I know that Voodoo hasn't quite wrapped up his latest POTW, but he asked me if I wouldn't mind posting one for Memorial Day weekend, so, without further ado...

Plant of the Week 60 is native to a large portion of the US, Mexico and even Cuba (zones 5-11). It is a medium to large wetland shrub species with unique blooms. Definitely not overly available in commerce, but well worth admiring in it's native haunts.

Typically a summer bloomer, I have seen shrubs of POTW 60 in bloom here in Memphis recently (although it feels A LOT like summer this past week -- temps in the mid 90s). It has a fairly long bloom time as it will produce flowers through most of the summer. Butterflies absolutely go crazy for POTW 60.

And finally, a closeup of the flower.
PM me with your guesses (please don't post answers) and I'll post the correct ID next week.

Plant of the Week 60 is Buttonbush, Cephanlanthus occidentalis .

As was mentioned before, it is a wetland species and really resents getting dry. I have used it a time or two in watergardens to pretty good effect. Seeing as how it can get 10' tall by 10' wide, it's certainly not for your average 10' x 12' pond, but for bigger projects it's certainly worth thinking about.

Congrats to phototropic1, VoodooChile and RottieMommy who all got the correct ID.

Thanks trees, looking back in the book I used, I see I would have been correct if I would have matched up the name under the picture with the correct description.

Maybe I ought to go back to school to learn how to do the matching type questions again.

Been so busy planting annual beds for the last couple of weeks I missed this POTW

It would have taken me a while to figure this one out because I have never heard of it before
