Viburnum Borer?

How common is Viburnum Borer?

Found in the Midwest?

Treatment effective?

A pest of all Viburnum, or only select species, like High-Bush Cranberry?

It's different from Viburnum Beetle, which I remember reading in American Nurseryman was a problem out East, working its way West?

I'm consulting a client on a tree-care contract, and this pest was new to me. Always thought High-Bush Cranberry self-destructed due to poor pruning, and trunk rot, but maybe its borers...

Add that to the list of things vibirnum is subject to.

The list for sudden oak death pathogens got about 2 pages longer this year. I was not going to grow anything on the list, but I had bought a lot of tree seedlings the week before hey inspected our nursery, and we had 100 grand firs, which are on the list, but they tested fine.

Please keep your pests contained.....

I don't know about the midwest. You might want to do a search of American Nurseryman. I thought I did read something last year saying it's in New York moving closer to CT. I also remember that at this time it is only effecting certain varieties.

Yes we have them especially in Viburnum opulus. Cranberry Viburnums. I don't use them anymore because they wind up dead!

We have been removing them on clients' properties because they are not worth treating continually.

I haven't seen much evidence of it in this part of the country, but then again, we are a little far south for that particular species. Maybe the ones we use are more resistant or that pest isn't common around here???

I'd ditto the AN search, or call your ag extension office for more info.

As always, prevention is worth a hundred pounds of cure. Keep the weeds away, mulch & fertilize on schedule and otherwise make sure it doesn't get stressed and the critters should stay away. Preaching to the choir here, I know, but it's worth repeating...

Viburnum beetle is different from Viburnum Borer.

I hear you trees about shrub health. Borers can sense plant stress and attack the weakest.

Viburnum opulus is the problem species at this account too pineapple. Dirr says borer has been a problem in the Midwest for this species.

Here's what UW-EX has to say, Viburnum borers
