removing grass from vinca?
How would you remove perennial grasses from vinca? Is there a herbicide which will only effect monocots?

we usualy don't have large patches of it....so we do by hand.
What we have done on some jobs is take hedge clippers and cut it all down.........it's kinda easier pulling the grass out that way.....if need be....we can return a week later and the grass has grown taller

We rip out the vinca. It is out of fashion in my area anyway. When I think of all the hand weeding that I have done in vinca... Just picture it, me spending all that time doing a good job pulling the grass by the roots, and my employees just pulling the grass leaves, happy as could be.

Hand-weeding failed for us, even after fighting for several years on a regular basis in an established patch of vinca; the root mass of the vinca and the perennial grasses were simply too intertwined to get at and remove the grasses' root mass.
If the patches are spotty, you might try digging those spots out, ammending, and replanting with new vinca.
I doubt you'll find an herbicide that will kill the grasses without whacking the vinca too.
Good Luck!

There is a herbicide that is used for grass growing in myrtle, unfortunately I don't remember it's name... but it does exist.
And the key with myrtle is to only use it in shady areas where it does not have to compete with the myriad of weeds that need sun. It's simply not dense enough to shade out those weeds.

Ornamec is what we use. We have also used a paint brush to paint on the Roundup to avoid damaging the Vinca if the patches are large enough.

You want a graminicide (grass killer). These plants are different enough where you can kill one without the other.

Fusilade II is registered for vinca (and a lot of other stuff, too). It's an OTT (over the top) product.

I didn't think that Fusilade would kill perennial grasses but I might be wrong. I know it doesn't kill fescue but does an awesome job on Bermuda.
We oversprayed 7 - 8 helleri hollies that had Bermuda growing through them and it wiped out the bermuda and didn't even brown the tips on the hollies.

you have to be careful when using fusilade around fescue when the temps get in the low 80s and up, it will fry it within a matter of hours..........i made that mistake one time while overspraying a yard that had bermuda in fescue, well the temps were in the mid 70s, but at some point during the day it got in the 80s and fried the whole lawn........lawn fixed at my expense so if you use it, PLEASE read the label carefully.

From our experience with Fusilade or Ornamec, you're really going to have to keep on it to get it under control.
I prefer the shovel method. By that I mean removing the vinca. But according to Voodoo's definition, I'm a plant snob.
