Plant of the Week 55

It's been a long time since I wasn't wearing a tool bet and was out in the field working, but finally last week the weather broke, and I was able to snap some shots, right before I buried a 1 ton pulling a brush chipper in the muck.

Plant of the Week 55 is a well-known Spring-flowering small ornamental tree, beloved for its profuse blooms, scorned for its disease-ridden foliage, and under-appreciated for its persistent ornamental fruit. This particular cultivar's fruit glittered in the sun like rubies.

Partial credit for the right genus. Full credit for the particular cultivar.

PM me with your guess. DON'T POST YOUR ANSWER IN THE THREAD.

ENJOY!

A close-up of POTW55's ruby-red fruit. I think in a mass planting with more evergreens as a backdrop, this cultivar could be a long-term Winter interest stunner. It will be interesting to note if and when the birds finally chow down on the fruit.

Is it a trick question? It looks obvious, but I know Voodoo is craftier than that!

Several folks have correctly identified both the species and cultivar of POTW55, and several people have complained that there are way too many cultivars of POTW55 that look way too similar to know exactly which cultivar it is.

Here's some more info on POTW55 to help out: flowers are single white, and the foliage is dark green with good disease resistance. POTW55 is trademarked, thus has a 2nd cultivar name.

But the fruit are what make POTW55 a real GEM in the landscape.
