Plant of the week 53
Let me be the first to start 2006 off.
I think this is a fun plant to try out just due to it's bloom time. These pictures were taken today. Although we have been experiencing above average temps this plant will bloom between Thanksgiving and the present. Buds began to break during 20 degree weather.
PM me with your guess. Lets let this run until next Sunday.

I forgot to mention I would like to see if we can get the cultivar as well as the species. I think the bloom colors will be the indicator. Thanks guys and gals!

chesie,
Could you please post a close-up of POTW53's stems; that would help distinguish one species in this genus from another.
Dirr claims that one species in this genus has 2000+ cultivars, so whoever comes up with the cultivar will be a true Hort-god!

Thanks chesie, I think that will do it.
I've only encountered this plant at the U.S. Arboretum in D.C. and Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle Beach. I suspect there are some cultivars more common in commerce, but what would us Midwesterners know of them??? Back to the books...

All you northern guys will have a hard time with this one (needs to be protected here in Memphis... serious microclimate in MD).
A Southern plant as POTW! No way!
Even though there are more cultivars than you can count, this one is pretty common.
I'll give a more lengthy dissertation as time draws nearer.

Hey!!!!
Give us Northern Guys some credit. We may not be able to grow them in our gardens but we can use them in conservatories and greenhouses
