Plant of the Week 50 is well-known as a climax species of the Eastern mesic forest. It features in Spring large yellow flowers on its upper branches, a towering straight trunk-- used to good effect to line the approach to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C.--, a distinctive leaf shape, and beautiful Fall color.

Private Message me with your guess. Answer posted in about a week. Good Luck!

The fall color was a new attribute to me, and my guys and I happily basked in the golden russet glow of POTW50 this afternoon while cleaning out gardens.

The weather has been tremendous in southern Wisconsin this Fall, and all the brilliant sunshine and vibrant colors have made for a glorious color-show!

I didn't design the garden in which this specimen of POTW50 is located, but I find the use damn near brilliant.

POTW50 has an upright habit and limbs up nicely, so interference with the power lines, pedestrians and house won't be an issue. The flowers are borne in the upper reaches of POTW50, and will be available for close inspection from the 2nd story windows. To my eye at least, this is a dramatic use of a large tree, that so far works well with the house.

Some of the other plant choices in this landscape haven't worked out as well...What do you think?

Here's a shot of POTW50 in its native haunts, growing next to an abandoned farm field in the Gunpowder Falls State Park in Maryland. The white dots in the middle and upper part of the canopy are its Spring flowers.

I've got a 50-footer in my back yard. No I didn't plant it.

Bamboo,
Whatever you call it, don't post your guess, right or wrong, in the thread!!!!

Yeah, I bet POTW50 isn't much in California.

The evergreen has a few years left. The giant shrub by the front door is doomed...

Whose seed pods?

PM sent. Near Biltmore, in the Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock wilderness area of western NC, is perhaps the most beautiful, virgin stand of these trees. The trees are so tall, with such a dense canopy, that they block almost all sunlight from entering the forest floor.

Took a ride through Joyce Kilmer on the way from Myrtle Beach to sunny Wisconsin, but never got to see the famous POTW50 trunks, cause I was too busy expressing my feelings about those hairpin turns...
