Plant of the Week 49

POTW49 is a native-to-North America, herbaceous perennial hardy to zone 4a that features handsome dark-green foliage from Spring til Fall, and unique rose-pink flowers in August and September. POTW49 prefers rich moist soils, and partial-sun, and will mature into an impressively-upright, slowly-spreading stand when happy.

Private message me with your guess. Answer and winners posted next Sunday.

Good Luck!

POTW49 looks great defining the edge of a rustic woodland path.

POTW49 derives its common name from the unique shape of its flowers.

Yes, that was a hint!

Plant of the Week 49 is Chelone sp. or Turtlehead. I'm not sure of the species designation (C. obliqua or C. lyonni). And no, I don't know if this is 'Hot Lips', but I'm willing to find out!

This particular stand is in a large garden which we just started to maintain this summer, and it has many cool unlabeled things in it.

Congratulations to dan deutekom, bcx400, Lanelle, Greensmith, treedoc1, RottieMommy, trees, LabourofLove, seachange (Great album), jwholden, and Bamboo who got it right.

Honorable mention to rivergirl for coming up with the best joke about POTW49.

_______________________________________________

Six weeks went by without a POTW while Spiderlilly and I were moving and getting back online so I feel compelled to mention that :

I don't own POTW!!! Anyone can post a Plant of the Week!!!

As best I remember, jwholden had the brilliant idea to post POTW1, and over the past two years many have contributed, including jwholden many times, diginahole, dan deutekom, agla, Stonehenge, Bill Schwab, Hamons, trees, and a few I'm sure I forgot (Sorry!).

There aren't really any rules, but the convention has developed that 1) A picture or pictures of an especially notable plant are posted with or without a description, 2) Guessers have one week to pm the poster with their guess, and 3) After a week or so, the answer and winners are posted.

It's pretty simple, and takes about 20 minutes total keyboard time...

So pony up you all with those great plants and pictures!!!
