Deer Population

That last thread about shady plants brought up the deer issue. What are you all doing about it?

The BEST deer repellant:

http://www.repellex.com/
(by the way, this link was down this morning, but it is the right one -- guess they're having server problems)

Comes in two forms, a spray and a systemic. The systemic really works. I used to work in Maryland where the deer were a major problem (saw many forested areas where there was literally NO understory growth). We used this product and it really worked. Systemic is the way to go. Put it in the planting hole and it will give extended protection (literature says 2 years, but I would do annually -- great add-on sales -- just to be safe) use the spray as a stop-gap until the systemic gets going. It's totally safe, but do wear gloves and a mask, cause if you get it on your skin or breathe the dust, you'll understand why the deer don't eat the plants after that

There are a number of "deer-resistant" plants, but if the deer get hungry enough they'll eat anything. I saw them completely defoliate 3 x 8' 'Dragon Lady' holly overnight -- OUCH!!!

Aside from that, I saw a recipe for a killer venison marinade in the Patio forum

Good Luck!

Well.... its fixing to drop by at least one here real soon....I am running low on summer sausage and jerky.

I can not run out of summer sausage and jerky, it goes too well with chips and salsa, and that cold Corona at the end of the day.

I am fencing in my 7.5 acres this winter with an 8' high fence. Here in S.E. PA (in my county) we can shoot one buck and over 12 doe per season. Last season, some friends and I took out 9 deer in my backyard. Within the last month I have counted 15 deer (all at once) grazing in my backyard.

As far as I am concerned, Deer are right up there with the Canada Goose. You can't kill enough of them.

Know what a customer told me. She said that she had boxwood and had used repellex on them. What happened is a pack of deer attacked one shrub each one took a bite and left but the rest of the pack proceeded to do the same absolutely killing the shrub.

There is several open space properties around here and the herd gets huge.
