Gravel/river rock on a sloped bed

Hello everyone.

I am working on a project that involves a long and narrow raised bed that slopes. I would like to use either gravel (such as basalt) or river rock (3-5") on top of the bed, instead of mulch.

This would be purely decorative, and not be structural in any way. My only concern is wash out and any undesirable movement of the rock.

Do you think I could get away with a 2-3" layer of 1" basalt, and have the end result be stable?

Hi Anna,
Anything you put on the slope will in time move..gravity and all that. With that said, I would use larger stones in depressions running parallel to the long edge to stabilize the stones on the high side. The steeper parts would need more stabilizers. Play with it a bit to see what works.
Hope that helps.
If you don't have time to do it right how will you ever find time to do it over?
