Percent of Gross
Now that the season is pretty much over for those of us in the colder climates we have a good idea of how the season went. I know many of you out are running your business on Quickbooks.
We can create an income statement that lists what percent of income every expense was; such as gas, employees, trucks, etc. Would anyone like to compare the percent of income some expenses were or is this too private to be discussed on the web. I know no one wants to touch dollar amounts with complete strangers.
I realize that this information cannot be equal for everyone, it depends on whether your business is more labor or product oriented. However, it is a starting point.
If there are any takers please let me know.

Ok we haven't closed our books yet, but I'll run the report later tomorrow. One question I should ask if your looking for profit % that should be after all expenses, even after salaries of owner or officers. Our company moved over to a labor base a few years ago (call it good fortune) after seeing the public works area starting to dry up. A quick look showed we where running about 5% profit (third quarter results).

I do not have a profit percent. The report I was referring to lists what percent of gross every expense was. For example, if I made 100K and spent 30K on employees this expense would be listed as 30%. If my cost of goods sold was 40K this expense would be listed as 40%. I'm always curious what companies spend on these categories and where I stand.
For the sake of simplicity let's categorize compaies based on sales as:
under 250
250-500
500 - 1 mil,
over 1 mi
I fit in the first category. I suspect you are over the last.
I'm not trying to start a bragging rights competition on company size or profitablility. I would love to see where different operations are with these numbers so we have something to compare ours with.

Here goes. Keep in mind this was by far my best year yet. Time will tell if it can be repeated. Oh, by the way it's an Excel spreadsheet. My category is 1 million plus.

Site,
Thank you for sharing that with us. It is very nice to have something to compare my percents with, though we are different size companies.
I'll attach my percntages and would love to see what other guys have. I fall into the less than 250 bracket.

Mine's in QB format; when I get a chance I'll enter the data onto something I can post here and put it up.

When you pull up your P+L on quickbooks it has a little box for sending the info to excel. Just send it there, then hide the $ column and protect.

Jeff,
That's what I did last night. I cannot begin to tell everyone how helpful this information can be. I often read the trade magazines looking for 'industry averages'. We can now share our info straight from the horses mouth.
The information will only get better if MORE CONTRIBUTE!

Well, I'll try to attach mine. Keep in mind I'm primarily maintenance so my percentages might not look like other guy's. The figures are for last year since I don't have totals yet for '03.
