Termination without proof?

Have an employee we suspect of stealing. Were at a friends house doing a walkway and a watch and medication were noticed missing. We're not sure this person took it but they had access into and out of the house, along with one other person. They seemed to be in and out quite a bit and are supposedly an ex heroine addict. (lovely employee, right?)
So we went away on vacation with just some simple things for them to do and set $23 in cash in the truck. The crew (3 guys) went to gas up and noticed the $ was missing. Suspicious guy supposedly said "do you think they'll notice?" Other guy said definitely. 2 out of 3 guys has reported (just now of course) personal items missing. Suspicious guy has not. Can we fire him without proof here in CT??

The only person qualified to answer a questin like that is an attorney who specializes in labor. If your employee decides he has been descriminated against you can't go to court and say, "The guys on GTX said it was ok to fire him."

Welcome to the Connecticut Nursery & Landscape Association

If you are in CT and a member of the Connecticut nursery and landscape association they have an attorney you can call for FREE with questions just like that. If you are not a member it is reason enough to join just so you can make the call.

I would think this employee's production levels and/or quality of work are not up to company standards.......

I would look at the laws in your state. SC is a "right to work" state which means you can be terminated at any time. I had to let two of my employees go for stealing beer out of a client's fridge....makes you appreciate the good ones.

TrickyDick is an unknown quantity at this point
A google search just told me that Connecticut is an "at-will employment state" which means that, like here in RI, you can fire anyone at any time for any reason. If you don't have proof of him stealing then you should probably just cut the cord without telling them that is why.

We haven't had a problem with that and here's one reason why:
NEVER, EVER, EVER let them go into a clients house. If they have to use the bathroom, go down the street to a store or use the woods like the animals.
Why were they going into the house?
We've had clients tell us, I'll be back in a few hours, help yourself to the fridge or bathroom. I tell them to lock the door and not to worry about us, not because we're not trustworthy but because it's just not proper business etiquette to use the customers house like it's your own. ESPECIALLY with "ex" heroin addicts!
Even when it's just my brother and / or I on the site, I still tell them not to worry about leaving the door unlocked. And some of these clients we have done work for several times.
It's just the way I practice my business but then again.... I've never had a problem.

Besides, I have some weird luck sometimes and the one time I go into their kitchen and get a Coke, my pants pocket would get hooked on the stove burner and accidentally turn it on without me knowing or somehow I would trip an alarm.

It's hard for someone to steal something from inside your house if they're not in it.
