Careful when interviewing...

Hi all,

Was reading a post the other day regarding interviewing and a couple days later it struck me...
There was a post regarding interviewing people and someone had posted they interviewed from there home.
Just my 2 cents...we have a small business and a home office. We *never ever* interview from our home. See if you can't find a coffee shop or something to interview from. We interview from Starbucks and I know other companies do the same. It's a crazy world out there and you never know who's going to be a gem and who's going not going to be such a gem. I would never want interviewees to know where I live. Granted we have 3 dogs that bite, but none the less.
Safer is better.

Again, I may be paranoid, but just my 2 cents.

Sandi

It was funny seeing my change in perspective over the years - when I was in college, home for break interviewing for a job, my prospective employer took me to a local spaghetti place for dinner and an interview. I couldn't believe how cool that was! I'm just a college kid being taken to dinner for a landscaping job!

I was thoroughly impressed. I got the job, and as it turned out, at the time he was also working out of his house, and that's where we met him each day. I never thought twice about it until decades later when I was working from my home and hiring people.

The light bulb went on.

That's good advice....

When I have new guys on the crew and we go through my street for maintenance......I don't tell them........"That house there......that's mine"

They will figure it out one day........or the other guys tell him.

I have become more aware and more protective over time........ever since this one incident....some years ago.

I had fired a guy who had worked with us a couple or a few months......he wasn't working out. Several warnings.....then terminated.

I had him come to my home a couple days later to get is final pay.........well, he showed up on a Sunday with a friend that had driven him..........He wouldn't leave....after an hour I went out and kindly asked him to leave..........he refused.......half hour later I asked them again to leave.....told them that I would call the police.........Called the police.....Cops told me as long as they were in the street........nothing the could do..........yeak ok.

Well............I went back out front and told them I had called the police.....10 minutes later they left...........5 minutes later they came back........I called the police again....got the same response.

Well......after 3 hours of them being in front of my house........I called the police and insisted that someone at least drives by..........they were loitering at that point.

Turns out........the friend that drove the ex-employee was arrested for weapons possession......He had a concealed 9mm in his back

Glan,

All I can say is HOLY CR** How scary! We're really hoping that next year we'll have enough $$ to have a "base". I have been thinking at least about a P.O. Box..as currently our checks and marketing materials have our home address on them...and you can never ever be too careful.
(as I post this I watch the news hearing how 3 young kids 7 & 8 years old have been ARRESTED for carrying knives and planning to attack their bus driver, and this is not even inner city! This is small CT country town!)
It's such a shame we have to live in such a world. I really hope more home-based businesses read your post. If someone wanted to find our house, easily enough they could, but even after someone is hired, we don't have them come here. I'd rather bust my butt a little extra, load up my own equipment, and be safe. It only takes one.
This person that got arrested...did they have the 9mm when they were harassing you???

I don't recall.......the guy with the gun drove the exemployee......I didn't see anything the couple times I went out to them asking them to leave......

After calling the Police for the third time in just over 3 hours......a couple cars showed up...These guys were just standing, leaning against the side of their car.......just talking....I actualy think the shmuck with the gun forgot he had it........Cop noticed it when the guy turned to get back into the car.

This happened around 15 years ago....

I have no problem with business mail coming to the house......or using my home address for the business.........and certainly can't hide in a bubble

From day one, I have tried to keep my business separate from my personal. I have a contractor bay where I get mail service, so ALL Kinnan-Scaping, LLC correspondence goes there. Better safe...
