Holiday Pay

Do you pay your employees for holidays? How long do they have to be employed to qualify or is it a matter of working the day before and after the holiday?

In Ontario it is the law. After employed 3 months you must pay for the Statutory Holidays of which their are 7 per year. The employee must work the scheduled day before and after to receive this pay.

Dan is correct, however persons employed in the agricultural sector are exempt from many of the employment standards. Included in the ag sector are landscape gardeners, sod installers and persons who install or maintain swimming pools. We are not required under the employment standards act to pay (or give time off) for stat holidays. I personally don't consider myself in any way shape or form to be in the ag sector. I pay my employees 9 hours for stat holidays while they are working for me. I also waive the 3 month probation period. In Ontario the first monday in August is a civic holiday that under the act is not considered a stat holiday, I pay for that one too. We take every long weekend off, no exceptions.

Paid Holidays- Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor day, Christmas, New years. No probation for new people, but all employees must work a full week the week before to qualify. I want qualified employees who want to stick around. If paid holidays are what it takes thats what I'll give. Around here it's not enough. I pay for school, I have a retirement plan, health insurance, paid vacations, I'm flexible about time off, and more. But, when I ask an employee for an all out effort he/she had better perform.

Site,

I like your attitude. I'd rather have two guys using their mind and body effieciently than five guys counting the hours. Whatever it takes to be profitable and keep the headaches down...long term motivated employees!

BTW, we took 3 days off two weeks ago and each man got 3 8 hour days for the time off, including the guy that started 3 weeks ago. I suspect I'll see them Monday and they will not be extending thier vacation!

I do not pay for holidays but by doing things like above and paid time off I hope to keep them around.
