keeping good employees

I like to think I have a pretty good record for keeping employes around for the long term, but there is still room for improvement. I pay well, give paid holidays and vacations, and offer health insurance and a retirement plan. I am flexible about time off for family events, etc. I pay for seminars and continuing education. I give challenging and rewarding jobs. I'm curious about what else can be done. There is no substitute for experience.

That all sounds yummy............maybe I'll go work for you?

I don't know what the answer is...

I have 3 guys that have been with me about 15 years. 1 now 4 years........another was with me 5 years, gone to factory work 2 years, now back again......and the rest seem to be transitional.

I don't give all that you give.

I have a friend that has a much larger company.....he pays his men for 4 holidays where I pay for 2..........His men do not respect him......

Another friend.....has a couple guys that have been with him a few years.......never show up on time

Me.....I have no problems with the men, except one. That has been discussed in another thread a while ago........anyway. All are on time, except 1 that can be 5 minutes late 1 or 2 days a week. They do what they are told for the day......They do their thing, I do mine.........we are all working towards the same goal.

Maybe that is the difference...........I am no different than them, they no different than me......and I am certainly not more important than they......without them. I couldn't do what I do. Without me they couldn't do what they do.

I sell the hype that we are in this together

site,

if you are in New Hampshire, what do you do in the winter? do you work or lay off people? people need year round employment to keep up with year round bills.

the best way to combat the grass is greener in someone elses field is to make you pasture/ company the greenest and best to be in. What does it take to make your company the best company to work for - well a ton of things. I think the key is to put on your thinking cap and try to make the most exhaustive list of reasons to keep on working for that you could possibly form. But also don't forget to form a list of reasons why people quit working for you or for other people.

my thoughts are that good employees are hard to find. If all you want is good employees, you don't deserve to have the absolute best employees. The absolute best employees are good employees found and then made into your definition of the absolute best employee. Basically good employees are found but the absolute best employees are MADE.

I ALSO BELIEVE THAT KEEPING THEM LOYAL TO YOU AND YOUR COMPANY IS BUILT BY ESTABLISHING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM

I also believe that keeping employees loyal to you is a function of the type and quality of relationship you have with them. You don't have to be buddies with them but neither do you have to be a total stranger. Somewhere there is a balance, find it.

remember that every employee is an individual. Each has a different set of needs each responds differently and to different things. Become familiar with the needs and desires of each employee. You may have heard of pushing someone’s buttons. every employee has a different name on their button, so read the name.

perhaps the whole secret is to know who or what type of person to hire. a young person with no wife and family might not be the best choice. There are certain characteristics to look for in every person you hire. So here again is a topic for which you need to put on your thinking cap and think long and hard about. in discipleship training I was taught to look for someone who was FAT. FAT stands for faithful available and teachable. perhaps though a young person may be a good choice if you can convince them that with you they can learn the profession and advance their career and salary and do so quickly and to a high level.

you may also want to look at forming a "corporate culture" and making known to employees that you are working on one. a corporate culture goes way beyond what an employee perceives are his chances of making more money. A corporate culture applies to every detail of what a company is and does and how they do things.

l would say to strengthen your abilities in the areas of mentoring and employee training and development. Develop a career track for people. When you can do this, this and this I will pay you this. when you demonstrate the ability to do these tasks i will give you another set of tasks and another raise to x dollars. Give employees hope for the future.

toot your own horn / tell horror stories about your competition. if you are a good person/ company to work for, every once in a while remind employees that you are a good person / company to work. no other company would let you use a company vehicle while yours is in the shop getting repaired. Say something like no other company in this area has a career and salary advancement program. try to build in them an attitude of thankfulness. man I’m glad he let me use a company vehicle, he is a nice guy so thanks but no thanks for the job offer, I like working where i am.

you might try taking some seminars or classes on employee training and development or look for training and retaining videos. Or hang out a lot in the business section of all sorts of well stocked bookstores or go to amazon.com

Let me put in a plug for one of my favorite stores, SUCCESSORIES. You can find it on the web at successories.com

the fact that you are thinking about retaining good people is the first step, now, put on your thinking cap and think longer and harder.

Site, It sounds like you're on the right track. Another thing I've realized is that the employees are proud of the fact that they work for a company with nice (safe) vehicles and the best equipment available. I initially did all those things to increase efficency etc. but over the years I often hear my guys bragging to others about these "toys." It makes them proud to work here. Don't underestimate that.... By the way , my 3 current employees have been here 12, 8 and 5 seasons, respectively.

I still think it boils down to two simple things; Money and respect (treat people how you wish to be treated).

That's probably how a lot of us got to where we are. The "no one is ever going to tlak to me that way again', or "I'm tired of his sh*t".

Sure there are a lot of other factors. But I think it starts there.
