Initial hiring period

Just curious what some of you are using as an initial hiring period for new employees?
Do you just outright hire them for good and wait for them to mess up X amount of times before firing or do you give newbies a "trial period"?
Am about to hire some greenhorns and to tell you the truth, I can usually tell in the first day if that person is gonna be worth anything. That being said, if they can make it through the first week then I'll probably let them stay. Just hate to promise someone a job without seeing what they can do.

Day to day for the first week or two with no promises.
If we see someone is not worth the second day, we tell
them in a respectful manner that they are not what we are looking for or whatever. Mostly because they may get hurt or aren't strong enough, etc.
After a week or two we have a sit down and move on from there.
Promising a job takes at least a season imo.

That's our feeling since most people want the big bucks up front but can't deliver or even come close to delivering what we expect.
My other brother tells me to pay newbies a higher wage and it will give them incentive. I tell him he's crazy, I have to see someone work for awhile before the better pay comes their way.

Tell your brother to never pay based on potential - you always end up getting burned.

Three month probationary period...but yeah, I usually can tell in a day-or-two.
