Now that a couple of more weeks have passed, how are things going?

Pretty well, I'd have to say. It's clear there are still many things to do, but we're making progress. Because I'm not doing everything in the morning to choose tools for the day, things are being forgotten - however, I'll soon be creating a system to correct that.

Another thing I'm finding is that I'm faced with a bit of a tight rope walk with regard to how much time to spend on the jobsite each day - too little and I'm just becoming an absentee landlord; too much and I slide too easily into the role I played before. I don't want to leave them to struggle through everything, but I don't want things to go back the way they were.

Also, because I haven't named someone as a second banana, most things they do are debated before they are acted upon. Part of that is lack of experience in not knowing what comes next or how to do something, part comes from wanting to be the one in charge. The guy I plan to name as 'the guy who's in charge when I'm not around' has a great approach with the guys and is very likable. He takes on the crud jobs to give the other guys the cush jobs, so they aren't stuck always doing the crud work. I also commended him on that as he's also cross-training the guys when he does that.

I'm trying to put him into situations and guage his reactions, to further flush out his mgt style. We seem to have a guy that's great w/ eqpt but allergic to handtools, and another who is just in general a slow mover. I can easily slide into my role of 'boot in ass' boss, but want to see how he handles it, and want to give him a level of authority to see how he exercises it.

This guy has shown a great decision making ability and great foresight with projects - he recognizes problems before they happen, and can usually come up with solutions to them.

He's nervous that I'm going to throw him to the wolves too soon, but I have more confidence in him than he does, which is also rare these days.

So yadda yadda, things are moving along nicely, I just need to continue to develop these guys. I plan to have more frequent mini-meetings in the morning to go over quality of work, procedures, that kind of thing so that as we grow everyone will be on the same page.
