Discovering you are paying someone to much

Happiest of Holidays to All.

My problem is a pay issue with an employee.
I agreed to pay him Starting rate + X to pickup and drive the other employees of that crew to the job site. My problem is: He never drives, another guy making starting rate drives. I feel like I am being played, or is it just me?

I have tried to decide what is fair to the employee.

Should I reduce him down to the non-driver rate
Should I release him
Any other ideas are appreciated

Work issues very seldom interfere with my personal time, however this one kept me up last night. So I know I have to find a resolution soon.

Peace,

Rex

I would assume you have good reason to have an assigned driver (listed as a driver on insurance, etc), and that he knows he's making more because he's supposed to be driving.

Is his other work up to snuff?

Letting him go seems harsh, but there may be other things at work I don't know about. But at the very least it seems that if you give your kid an allowance for taking out the trash and he doesn't take out the trash, then he doesn't get the allowance. He's not doing the job he's getting paid to do.

But that's just one guy's opinion.

Make that 2 guys' opinions. I agree with Stone. You've got to have a sit-down with him and explain your concerns. Lay it out in black & white. If he doesn't drive, he doesn't get a driver's stipend. Period.

Without anything further to go on, it sounds very cut & dry. He's not driving, reduce him to the standard starting rate and increase the other guy's pay.

Each individual should be responsible enough to find their own transportation to-and-from work. Having said that, I allow my most-experienced employee/foreman to take a truck home and back most days and he usually picks up the other two on the way in, and drops them off on the way home. I don't pay him "less" because I allow him to use the truck, and I don't HAVE to let him use it...I could just park it at the storage yard and tell them to take the bus.

My wife thinks I'm being overly generous providing transportation like that, and sometimes I wonder myself. Maybe I just figure an added perk like that will help retain employees in a business where it's hard to keep 'em for long.

Add a girl to agreements! Before you do make your decision: (1)is there anything in your handbook about this and (2) was the employee made aware of the differential due to the increased responsibility of transporting?

IMO I would remove "yourself" from the disciplinary decision. It should be what's a fair repercussion from the "biz", not from you so to speak.

The guy driving gets the driving rate, the guy watching out the windows looses the driving rate. Simple as that.
