Hiring process

Thought Id ask everyone if they have any certain interview techniques or questions , signs, anything you look for in a person. I would like to have a more systemized way of hiring than the usual employment application.

Either for crew leaders or laborers

Turtle, you may find some good stuff just perusing this forum. Here's a thread with some of the questions I use: Interview Questions

Also, one of the biggest determinants in hiring for me, and a "question" I know others here now use, is "Can you push this wheelbarrow with 400 lbs of Versa-Lok in it down to that mark, turn around, and come back?"

Just read about this one,

"Tell me about your former boss."

If they take this as an opportunity to take shots at their former employer they have a problem with authority. You want to hear anything from good to ok comments here, no/very little badmouthing.

I spent a lot of time trying to perfect the process with fancy interview forms, questions, lists, etc.....

In the end I found that a simple approach has worked the best for me.

After the interview is over and I have determined that they are qualified for the position I will ask myself a few questions:
Is this person honest?
Is this person nice?
Does this person have a good attitude about life in general?
If I were a customer would I find this person agreeable and someone I would like providing services for me?

Finally...

I listen to my "gut".

Isn't it funny how sometimes when you ask this question someone will go on and on...and on about how bad their last boss was? In those cases they get knocked down two notches - one for badmouthing their former boss, one for going that far without realizing there might be something more behind the question than just letting them air their laundry about the old boss.

I lost site of this one for a hire a couple years ago. Realized a few days in that I'd made a mistake - what a miserable person to be around. He was always on time, but after awhile even that wasn't enough to keep him employed.

If you were a Big Mac sandwich, what part would you prefer to be?

If they answer "the person making it", they have passed one phase.

LOL Bill......pretty cool

I go through a very, very simple process....

I ask if they have experience......detail that experience....How many years, what machines, planting?

Why they are looking for new employment?

OK.......so now that you told me you have experience and can do as you said.........Lets see. You start today and you will be doing everything you said you can do........If you lie about being able to use machines you will not last the day...............If you can operate some machines efficiently but lied about others.........we will see comes the end of the day.......

If they are keepers from the first day........they are told. You have to become part of the team within the week. Problems with getting into the routine or with other men working with you, you will not work here past that first week and can be released at any time.

Make it past the first week......You have the job as long as you want to work here.......as long as you continue with the above.....I remind you, it is up to you how long you stay with us. Lastly I tell them......3 of the men you will be working with have been here 15+ years.
