Had a job interview scheduled for 6:00pm. Timeliness I feel is one of the first indicators. I waited until 6:07 then packed up and left. This individual had said that this was the best time to make the interview because of current employment....I reluctantly went with it instead of my daughters soccer game. Big mistake!

As I'm driving to make the last 3 quarters of the soccer game he called and said, "What happened? I thought we had and interview scheduled." My reply was "if you can't respect my time at the very least with a call saying you are running late you need to look elsewhere for employment" and hung up. He has since called back leaving a message apologizing. Yet no explanation has been given as to the reason why he was late in either call.

Who would give him a second chance? I am not going to.

You should go with your gut feeling on this one.

Nope. No second chances here, either. If I have no reason to be at the yard when 5-10 minutes has passed, I close up and go home.

On a funny note, I just interviewed a guy a few days ago - he was 10 mins late, I was closing up shop as he pulled up. I though, 'ok, I'll at least hear him out.' Turns out there were several other reasons I wouldn't hire him, but I almost burst into laughter as he tells me about how his martial arts learning and teaching has given him discipline, and he teaches the kids that 'even if you don't want to get up in the morning, you have to have the discipline to do it.' He somehow was not able to see the hypocrisy....

As a side note, the 2 guys I just hired were 10 minutes and 20 minutes early to their respective interviews.

Heck, I had a kid who missed the interview because his car broke down. No 2nd chance there, either. Especially since I asked the day before "Do you have reliable transportation to get you to work?"
