Overtime

How many hours a week do you allow your employees to work overtime?

We are usually around 50 hours per week, or 10 hours OT. Truthfully, I'd like them to work a little more. I'd prefer to have them put in 20 hours of OT per week, rather than hire and outfit another crew. I just try to price accordingly.

So then you are using billable OT and not taking money away from your net right?

I try to factor in a little OT for every project I sell, so that when we are working 50-60 hours per week, it doesn't punish my bottom line. But there were enough other things that punished my bottom line this year. Thankfully I'm taking part of the thinking out of pricing next year, so some of my boneheadedness should be eliminated from the bottom line issues I had this year.

We are down to working 20 OT hours, give or take a week. We are taking the day before and after Chiristmas, then the same on New Years, after that it is back to the grindstone...

We always said that we only let our people work part time, we just get to pick which 12 hours of the day they do so! When I was an owner though, it was more like 70-80 hours a week for me personally! Tim

Oh - if we're talking the hours that I work, not my people, then were talking about 80-100/wk. I'm always jealous of part-timers like Tim.

Bill,

Is California OT anything over 8 hours per day?

Peace,

Rex

It is anything over 8, no matter what you work during the week.

All job overtime is budgeted into prices, and the way we do it is our labor rate is $62.50 for straight time. Overtime ohours are $93.25. Now before anyone does back flips over the number, consdier most of you pay between $6, and up to $9.50 per 100 for comp depending on the state....

We pay $26.25...This is also recovered in our hourly rate... The average laborer basic robot with little skills is sitting at $14.00 per hour, many places in the midwest pay $8.00.

Foremen get $22.00 an hour...Property mortages and rents for a small space go over $4,000.00 a month...In a few more months we will be an owner rather than a leasor.

Anyhow, perspectives!

I must agree to having it pretty easy now than compared to my past. But even then, I knew when I needed to stop and say "Thats enough!" You can plant a million flowers, but never fully appreciate it, unless you stop, and take the time to smell them! You may have to turn down some work, but remember to take time for yourself!

My hours now are pretty normal. I only work about 55 per week, unless I am traveling, or doing a trade show. Then it's usually in the 100 hour neighborhood again! Tim

Bill you've been away too long from the Midwest. Here wages are now $35.62 with bennies. Operators are getting $51.24 with bennies.
