Patent
Does anyone know how someone would go about patenting a product.

You'll need to start with a patent attorney. I believe you can do a search yourself through the US patent office's current patents: http://www.uspto.gov/patft/
But to be more sure that you are not infringing on someone else's patents, having a patent attorney will be helpful in doing that search as well as filing the patent. You should probably plan on spending at least $10K and a year or three to get your patent. Sometimes it's more money, sometimes it takes longer. Depends on the type of patent, too.
Hope that helps.

What are you patenting?
Tread carefully. I know a few people who have spent good money on patenting who regretted it.

REPUTABLE patent attorney, and be damn care full who you share your idea with.
I can name and point to 3 different engineering / development on certain pieces of commercial turf equipment that I suggested to the company and lo and behold some engineer at the factory took credit for ,and got paid extra, for the items.

For something this important, I'd never use a fast food-style online patent service. If you are in a bigger market, there will be patent attorneys in your area. Find someone local.

Aztlanc,
I work for a patent attorney. If you are serious I can send you his number and you can call his office and see if you can get some questions answered.

I think everyone has an idea or two in their heads. I know I do. As far as I know most ideas take a large monetary commitment to bring something to market. Everytime I see inventors pushing a product I ask how much they are in it for and surprisingly most tell me. Two recent examples: Double head toothbrush. $1.2 million to market. Hand held plastic mold that you put on a chainsaw file for better grip and comfort. $120,000. You wouldn't think either idea would have cost so much but if your idea sells that investment could be a small drop in the bucket. I don't have that much confidence in any of my ideas to invest that kind of dough.
PS clark howard rules!
