Choice of Turf or Ground Cover for Difficult Area

Any advice or input would be appreciated. The client is in Eastern CT, Zone 6. Soil is a sandy loam, half in full sun, half in pretty deep shade under some trees. The shady half is a high-traffic area: two large dogs have worn the ground bare. No irrigation in place, but this would be easy to do if required.

Are there turf grasses that will tolerate shade and stand up to heavy traffic once established? If so which would you recommend?

If not, is there another form of ground cover, not a turf grass, that might be acceptable?
