first you need to remove the existing grass, then till and level your area, maybe bring in some topsoil to help level everything off, i like to use a starter fertilizer under the sod, ive had the best results when doing that, and then lots of water. Ive been paying $1.55 per sq yard of sod and depending on acess to the area charge $5-8 per yard to install

What NCSU said plus: Have sod delivered to your site and placed as close to install area as possable. Sod is perishable(sp), install ASAP. We pre wet the site to help the roots absorb water just prior to our install, Do not over water during this step-you do not want mud. After install, Roll in sod to get all air pockets out from under and to get good contact with soil. lots of water after install until roots have set, then water regularly thereafter. $1.00-$1.25 per sq ft includes prep/fert/install.

GREEN SIDE UP !!!

Also, depending on the time of year and what turf type you are installing, we also spread a granular fungicide to prevent any brown patch. ( The tall fescue is very susceptible to brown patch down here when the humidity arrives.) Looks like the sod is drying out so client usually pours the water to it, which in turn spreads the fungus even more.

Rent a power sod cutter your back will thank you. You can do the manual route for leveling small areas but the bigger areas like 1/4 acre or more will be done a lot quicker with machines.

What are you trying to level? Are you trying to regrade the area ?
