Spring overseeding when apply crab grass pre-emergent

Okay... so I've always stayed away from overseeding or slit seeding in the spring when a crab grass pre-emergent was applied or needs to be applied.

I was watching a re-run of Ask TOH this past weekend and Roger Cook was with a homeowner de-thatching, fertilizing and seeding. The homeowner referenced not seeding with crab grass pre-emergent, but Roger said he picked a product that wouldn't effect the newly planted seed.

Does anyone know what product he was referring to? Have you used this and does it work?

If I do have to put down a pre-emergent in late March or early April, what would the earliest time be after application that I could seed with a pendamethalin (spelling?) type pre-emergent?

Tupersan

Active ingredient is siduron

can be applied for crabgrass control if seeding certain cool season grasses. Not extrememly effective and very high priced.

I think its better to apply nothing -- wait until second mowing and then hit ti with Dimension and some acclaim.

for the pendi -- read the label -- it tells you.

WHat Jeff said. Get the seeding done and treat accordingly afterward. Keep a close eye on things. You may still be able to spot treat.

Sometimes these TV shows kill me. A client asked me about Con Gluten his morning after seeing it promoted on Martha Stewart today!

Lanelle is on a distinguished road
Corn Gluten is available at some garden centers in this area. I recall a large HOA requiring their maintenance contractgor to use corn gluten on the common areas. If people are willing to pay the higher price for the stuff and understand the limitations of the product, might as well use it.

Your right Lanelle. Around here, they earely are though. I have people all the time ask for Organics, and when I tell them the price they settle for our regular fert and no weed control!

We've had good success with Siduron but it is really expensive and has a pretty short control period. Works best with split app if you can manage it.
