Weeds in Buffalo Grass...

Hey all, I seeded a yard with buffalo grass this past May. It's looking really good right now..filled in very well in a short time. It had a lot of nutsedge, crabgrass, smartweed, and other broadleaf weeds in it, so I spayed it with Bayer Advanced Weed Killer for Lawns. It's working really well so far, killing all but the buffalo grass. I'm worried about weeds next spring though since some of the weeds have already gone to seed. What pre-emergent herbicide should I apply? Anyone have experience using corn gluten as a pre-emergent?

CGM has several drawbacks.

#1 it is minimally useful at best as a preemergent. I experimented with it a few years back and could not get very good results.

The second is rate. It is usull y suggested that it needs to be applied at 20#/1000 feet squared. Commecrcially that would be very difficult becaus if I am out treating 250,000 ft2 one day I woul dneed to take 5000 pounds CGM wiht me -- that is a lot of bags to carry.

Also, rate effects the amount of nitrogen I have to put down. Applied at 20#/1000 ft2 that is 2#N/1000ft2 thta will release before June. That is about 400% more than I would like to apply.

It sound slike you may be homeowner just treting one lawn. IF so -- these problems mat be outweighed by the environmental aspects of not using a herbicide. I can agree and I run an organic based lawn care company who uses pesticides responsibly. Just remember, the corn that was grown from that CGM used exponentially more pesticide than you would be applying on the lawns.

My choice on preemergents is Barricade(prodiamine) applied in early winter at 9 month rate.
