How many of you use a stick edger and how many just flip your weed trimmer up to edge? I know not a very thought provoking question, but I was just curious. Half of my guys like to use the edgers and half like to use the weed trimmers because they think it's faster to not have to stop working and go back to the truck.
It is not a dumb question. I am a master, not ashamed to admit, of "flipping" the trimmer over and cutting beds. I can get them almost perfectly straight where they need to be straight and curved where they need to be curved. I spend a lot of time on a trimmer this time of year. Here is my (no longer) secret advice.
RHINO line. It is like a saw. It cuts so well. With stick edgers you just can't get that precise edge. Cuts too deep. But here is the real trick. As long as the plants aren't too close to the bed edge, you can use the trimmer line to "dig" out the edge and you have a nice bed lip ready for mulch. Vertical and then horizontal. Blow it down and you have saved a ton of time not having to edge with a spade.
If the job is priced to be done by hand, you just made a bit of extra money as well.
familyguy, good input, but I was referring to edging along sidewalks, driveways, etc. where a stick edger is commonly used. Sorry, I should have been more specific in my initial post. I've always used a weed trimmer for beds and such, just wandering about edging along flat work.
aleays flip around edges like those as well. we have an estate that we flip the trimmer on every single 2x2 blue stone square on the stepping stone path. every side of every stone. not a big deal? the path is over 100 long.
we use the edger for hard surface because it does a uniform job faster that any expert with a weedeater. ALSO MUCH SAFER, due to rocks being thrown less distance.
I only pull out my stick edger for a new account, or for that one picky customer of mine in Oakville that requests it every season. I too, am a Yoda of the trimmer so I prefer to leave the edger on the trailer.
