Snow Cover

Ok Folks

Those of you in Snow Country......

If you had snow that covered the lawn most of this past winter have you noticed anything different about the lawns?

Where I am and most of the North East had snow on lawns that never seemed to go away. There is a significant difference in our lawns as compared to other winters where the lawns are not snow covered.

Post of what you have observed or not

Nothing out of the ordinary here. Some snow mold and a few vole tracks. Thats about it.

That's interesting. And totaly understandable regarding the snow mold.

In truth.........we don't have any down here.

What we are experiencing is lawns that came out of winter in the best shape they have ever been in years. We didn't have squeril activity in early or during winter...Had no heaving of turf in those typical half day sun areas. And in fact........north side of buildings where we all experience turf die back during winter....Nothing.

We had an early snow fall just as the soil surface froze.....then some what a mild spell till the end of January when we had a 15 inch storm. From that point on snow covered the turf till we began cleanups. March 21, 2005

Last year (2004) we had snow cover for the longest period in 20 years.

The lawns did green-up faster and were healthier than I could ever remember.

Oh did I spell squirrel wrong? sorry.

There activity is often digging little shallow holes in the ground in search food. This is more common under Oak trees.........But this spring........lawns look fantastic even under Oaks

Squerils are what we pan fry here.
Also, quite excellent in stew.

And snow is a great insulator!!!!!!!! Love to see that snow covering the turf and plants when it is in the twenties or lower here in the MidWest.
