The reason I'm asking is that we just had an employee get hurt climbing out of the back of a dump body. Our trucks have drop sides, which does minimize the "on the tire and over the boards" situatuations, but not totatlly. There are times when the truck is full and the sides can't be dropped.
Do you guys have some sort of ladder set up (pictures or links if possible) or are you praying and hoping those boards will always hold that employee? I did put little flip down foot holders to step on, but even that seems awkward and not ideal.
Yeah, we've always done the "on the tire, over the body" thing.
One thing that one of our competitors does that seems to work pretty well is they have a lift gate as part of the dump body door. I bought one of their old trucks and having that lift gate can be really handy. Kinda like a moving van might have.
On one of our trucks we have a ladder on the rear of the truck that folds in under the bed much like the ramp for a U-Haul truck. It still is awkward though. I will try to get a picture of it for you on Monday.

John here are some pictures of the ladder on the back of one of our dump stake trucks and the ladder on the side of a masons dump.
The stake trucks ladder slides under the box and it is easy to slide out when needed. It is designed so that it dosn't fold under when you stand on it.

Hey Dan,
That DEL Box in the last photo is what we've been looking to get, how has it stood up to the tests of time?

That truck is only about 2 years old and so far the box has been trouble free. The only minor problem is that the sides are hard to reclose because the tolerances of the latches are so tight. Nothing 5 minutes with a grinder wouldn't fix. One of these days I will get around to it.
