angry ts400 idle problem

Hi all, i have just aquired a ts 400. now according to the workshop manual the disk should stop on idle, but it dont. i have adjusted the L & La scew accordingly... L=1 And adjust LA till disk stops. but all it does is cuts out. any ideas on this... also when i took the case (handle) off i can see that the carb has 3 screws not 2... wat is the third... could this carb be off an older model... i.e the H screw... thanks in advance

Mark

I find that cleaning the foam pre-filter has surprising effects on how the TS-400 runs. My 2 won't shut off with the on/off switch when the pre-filter is dirty, and have to be choked to kill.

I have never adjusted the carb screws. Leave that to my mechanic.

thanks for the reply, i did actually notice that it would never shut off properly but know it does... must be because of cleaning the filters.. thanks . just want to know why the disk still runs on idle...

I'm no mechanic but I would speculate that when the filter is clogged the fuel-mixture is richer due to a lack of oxygen. This might account for the blade continuing to spin, but it doesn't explain why the on/off switch doesn't work!

With all the tinkering with the carb screws you probably are running too rich.

The TS-400 blade is belt-driven off of a drive sprocket back by the block. Since the only lubrication it takes is in the fuel mix, I doubt there is a clutch...but I've been wrong before, especially about engines. Maybe your belt is a tad tight?

My local rental place is a Stihl dealer, and the owner is a fantastic mechanic (being a hobbyist race car driver helps). He has me bring in all my new Stihl equipment after 10 tank fulls for a carb tweak, no charge. I would think about giving your dealer a shot at it.
