I have been looking for a 4500 or 5500 for some time and came acroos this one. I want 4x4 with the Duramax allison combo as well as a landscape or stake dump. Let me know what you guys think of this and if there is anything i should look for on this truck (problems, parts, condition). Thanks!
The price seems pretty high for that year and mileage, especially with the market in the shape it is. I'd ask about the hydraulic pump, I'm not a big fan of electro/hydraulics on a truck that size. A PTO pump or underhood pump would work better in this application.
Otherwise, it's a nice truck. The Duramax/Allison combo is very durable and reliable.
A friend of mine in the auto industry told me that used cars are getting more expensive because of the increase in demand. As for the electric hoist, I would see if they could hook you up with a pto. I know guys with that same truck that have a hard time dumping 2 yards of dirt.
i will try to see what they can do about the hoist, but overall what do you guys think about it? it would be used year round for plowing and salting, as well as landscape renovation and installations including hardscapes.
I bought one last year with 3000 miles on it. The Duramax Allison combo is pretty bulletproof. Plenty of power. My complaints- Its too tall. Climbing in and out 10 times a day will make you consider carrying along a step ladder. You can't see the plow- once again because the truck is too tall. It's less productive than a 3500 for most storms because it's less maneuverable.
It's sort of an in between truck. Too big to easily work out of, and too small to really haul a lot. I have considered selling mine and getting a 26,000lb rack body dump.

I wouldn't be concerned about the mileage other than a bargaining chip for the purchase price. You can easily get 200,000 miles out of that drivetrain.
if you are going to be carrying ballast like salt, you likely wont need 4wd im told. I want to get a used class 4/5 too but I think most are too much money. I keep waving my cash but no one wants to take what I think they are worth.

I have heard they were nice because of their height so you can see better, and i have also heard they are more maneuverable than a 3/4 or 1 ton? maybe im wrong?
i spoke with a guy who has a fleet of 4500s - some gas and some diesel. He told me that it is unusual for the diesel to get significantly better fuel milage. Just food for thought.

duramx and allison are a great combo. if maintained it will last a long time. has the truck been plowed with before ? If so be wary, plowing beats the hell out of trucks and the salt aint great either. What size box is on it. Tuff to plow small lots and driveways with that truck if it has a 10 foot box. The truck looks to have a scissor lift if so it will not have any problems dumping if sized properly. Whats the gvw?
i havent asked about whether it has been plowed with, but will when i talk to the sales rep. The box is a 12 ft Rugby landscape dump i believe. I was looking into the duramax and allison for the added power, but that is good food for thought mac.
that was the same guy who told me he never needs 4wd for traction when he plows in his - but he also admitted to running with 4-5 tons of salt in his dump bed.
