Gotta love the Home Depot rental dept.

How did I do? Got a one year old Wacker BS 60-2i jumping jack in excellent condition for 1k and a one year old Honda FC600 mid-tine tiller in excellent condition for $450. They let most of their stuff go after one year for 1/3 the new cost. I'm going to call around to the other stores and see if I can find a concrete saw.

Good to know. I've been trying to find out what happens to the rental trucks both there and at Lowes when they are turned in. They would work great for towing my mowing crew around.

very good to know indeed. I need to upgrade to a 1550 plate tamper from my Sakai. A JJ would be nice too...

You're kidding? That cheap eh?

How does one go about buying the equipment? Just go straight to the store and ask for it?

They don't rent equipment at our locations yet - but I believe it's coming. I'll be sure to keep an eye out. I bought a beat up old Ryan sod cutter from a rental yard about 6 years ago for $600 - still runs great today.

Wow, this is like a gold mine. I hope none of the other companies know about this, doubt it though.

Thanks guys!

Man the store around here doesn't sell stuff nearly that cheap. I've looked at thier used stuff a few times a thought they were asking like 80% of new prices.

I know this isnt the point of this thread but god how the HD rental department sucks! When they opened we tried them out for a while cause they had all nice new equipment and opened earlier than our local place. The equipment became junk so fast it was incredible and the people working were totally incompitent and obnoxious. The final straw was when we rented a good sized chipper from them (not a cheap item) that didn't work at all. Didn't start. They couldn't start it either. They made us pay for it for a whole day because we didn't call within an hour of pick up to tell them it didn't work. When asked where that policy was written they couldn't point it out but they were sure it was a policy. We had to call HD corporate to get a refund.

I like renting from the places where there's a cranky mechanic who gives the instructions on using the equipment.

He's cranky because he's seen how the equipment can be (ab)used, and doesn't want to have to fix the same thing for the 11th time.

He also seems to know every machine inside and out, and can diagnose most problems by phone.

Tricky, I bet the sod cutter there was used to strip asphalt - I know that was true of one from one of the local rental yards here. There are some real brain trusts using this rental equipment, so unless they have a good, experienced mechanic (not a one day Home Depot "certification"), their stuff will probably always be broken.

What rental company doesn't fire up the equipment before it leaves the yard???

Home Depot does here, and their equipment has been very reliable, with decent prices and good service.

Too bad I hate the place.

I hate the store but will drive further to rent from them. The other rental places around here never replace stuff no matter how ragged out it gets. I asked the manager of one place if he wanted to sell his ancient Dingo and he looked at the computer and said "Why would I want to sell it-I've made $168,000 off that machine?"

United rentals is another big chain that sells there used studd cheaply. I have bought a big BCS tiller from them and my Brown Bed Edger. Both were quite reasonable and have been super reliable.

One thing about the "rental models" of many units is they almost always ahve a Honda engine on them -- ultra reliable.

That doesn't seem like the smartest thing to say. I guess you shouldn't feel too bad then if something were to, say, happen to that machine while it was being rented.

I got a Bosch demo hammer for $875 and a Husqvarna gas powered pole pruner for $300 w/ 8 brand new chains. I know the tool rental manager at Depot. He called today and told me they are replacing all most all of their equip, he's gonna hold a few things for me ,cant beat the deals.
