JP, I'm beginning to think that we need to start a lobby to get law enforcement to understand the laws they are enforcing. Here's a relevant document from the New York DMV: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/cdl/cdl10sec01.pdf
Read 1.1 in that document and tell me if that doesn't sound like the 12,000# trailer would require a CDL only if the GCRW (truck and trailer combined) is over 26,000. Sure looks like it to me.
My son/foreman and I both have Class A CDL's with air brake endorsement.
A bit of paper work, physical, drug test. There are testers here who "rent" you the truck to take the test.
I used my own Freightliner and borrowed a trailer from a friend to take the test at our yard. Don't ask me how I got it home..thats a secret..
We are good to 82,000 GVW which cover's us just fine. I am just tired of dealing with all the hassle's, so now we can load every damn piece of sports field equipment up almost on one truck to go to jobs.
We had to go to the larger trucks, the Freightliner and 50 foot drop deck trailer, and our GMC 7000 with 24 foot bed and a 24 foot trailer behind it.
You gots to bill out some more dollars..but I am liking it a lot more than staight landscaping...31%net profit last job.
Jeff,
You make a good point here! I have a friend who's a trooper and I'll grill him on it. No tickets for me, but I did get a warning for not having a CDL physical with my 1 ton. Any vehicle over 10K gvwr and you have to have the physical, just not the license. Now I've got them all!~

Do I stay or do I grow now?
John P.- I'm in NY also and am preparing to have my guys all get their class A because we run trucks rated at 17K and any trailer rated at even 10K puts us over the 26K mark. But I believe if you check it says, (I'm looking at the State book now), "A CDL is required to operate any of the following...a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds IF the gross combination weight rating is 26,001 or more."
So if your pickup is rated at 10K and the trailer is even 14K you'd be OK with just a standard license because your combined weight is under 26K.
...oops, I just noticed Stone may have pointed out the same thing.

I am running 2 W4500's gvw 14,050.......1 trailer is just under 7,000.
Not that long ago.....we in NY had a classification "Class C NonCDL"
Meaning that if driving any truck with any trailer as it pertains to business.........Class C = Commercial, NonCDL = Not a Commercial Drivers License.........Which catagorized anything under the 26,000 combined weight.
Take a written test as for any CDL.....Manifest, Physical papers, etc......
Totaly stupid.......Thankfully the powers to be......Governer had that removed from the law books.
With my operation....we can stay below the 26,000 easily.........but. That is not to say that the dump it's self has not been over weight from time to time
This exam is taken by those drivers who operate a combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds GVW,
So can I run my older f450 with gvw of 15500 with a 10000 pound trailer?
I need to buy an equipment trailer and now im totally confused but glad this thread was here.
Like Glan we used have a class D license just for truxks over a certain gvw It happened to include all those Hummers so it got taken off our laws as well
Any thoughts here as to what size trailer who makes a 9900 # trailer ?
You wanna know what is stupid... I have to have some one with a A CDL drive me to the practical test. Now how am I supposed to do that!? I have to ask a dump truck driver to take the morning off to baby sit me? WHAT THE HECK??? Who is gonna do that for me?

I had to do this as well. Somehow, once I passed the inspection, skills and road test, the truck\trailer and I made it to the DMV without that guy to get my full-fledged license.
