Hitch on CAT MTL
I believe the ASV RC-50 and -60 come with a hitch w/ 2" receiver. I bought the CAT 247B instead, and several times now I really could have used a hitch, usually to tow a chipper where a truck could not go.
Anybody install a hitch on a CAT such as this one?

Why not put a hitch on the front? We welded up a contraption that slides over one of the pallet forks and then tightens down and has the ball set on top....very manueverable. Great for moving trailers around and very easy to drive foward with the trailer.

Something like that might work for us. The local Bobcat guy told me they make an attachment that 's basically a plate onto which you can weld your own creations.
CAT does not make a chipper attachment for my machine, and finding a different brand that might fit and work, for rent, is proving quite difficult.

Won't the bobcat chipper work.
I have seen a 3 point hitch chipper, you could get that to work if you could also get a 3 pt hitch attachment, and they are out there. But finding one won't be as easy as walking up to the rental counter.

Can't you just wrap the chains around the bucket or forks for the few times you do this and drive backwards? If not, get a set of pallet forks, cut a hole in the end of one to accept a ball. They selll a attachment like this in northern hydraulic. In fact, I think they sell a hitch mount plate too now that I think about it. Better yet, do a ebay search. They seem to have tons of stuff like that for skidsteers and they are usually cheaper than buying from a dealer of regular store front.

Bobcat chipper will not work due to the need of special controls in the cab, I was told.
I suppose we could drag a small rental chipper w/ chains - we've done that before but it puts the chipper at some risk of minor damage. We're currently working on a golf course with some mighty steep hills.
Yeah, I'll see what's available on ebay and Northern. Thanks!

How heavy of a chipper do you use? I'm asking because a friend of mine recently did a job similar to yours and had a hard time pulling his chipper up a hill with his tl130. His woodsman chipper weighs about the same as the ctl. You would definitely be better off pulling backward uphill than if you had a hitch on back.

I think you could just weld a receiver tube under the engine cover for your hitch. That's a real stout piece of steel there, it's used both for tying down and lifting the machine. I'd mount it as high as possible so you don't run in to ground clearance issues.

We are renting a chipper that weighs 6700 pounds, but that will be towed by our mini dump on the 9-foot-wide wide cartpaths. We've got 36 large trees to chip. Sad to say we'll have to rent another, smaller chipper to move with the CAT (don't own a chipper yet). Probably something that weighs about a ton.
Yes, welding the receiver tube on sounds good. Maybe the best way to go is have the capability to tow from both ends of the loader.
Thanks for the advice.
